The Voices "Cavern/Spooky"

Release Date: June 2008

Tracklisting:

A1: Cavern

A2: Spooky

B1: Spooky (Woolfy Neu-Rave Disco Mix)

REVIEWS

Turntable Lab - Since when is two tracks an EP? Well, I guess when you have Rong Music's new disco MVP Woolfy hittin the remix, you can call it what you want. The Voices are cool and although they only have two tracks on here, they're a great example of detailed grooves. "Cavern(1)" rides on a "disco not disco" vibe not often heard these days while "Spooky(2)" funks on a slow burning cosmic jam sure to send you on a psychedelic space trip. The real meal though is "Woolfy's Neu Rave Disco Mix" of Spooky(3)" that still keeps the spaced out psychedelic synths in there, but ups the tempo to raise the dancefloor energy. Although, I already predict most will sleep on this, trust me, it's quality.

Rough Trade - The Voices must be paying their dues to the legendary E.s.g. with this new one on Truffle. 'Cavern' and 'Spooky' both drop serious bass grooves and then Woolfy gets in on the act turning the punk funk into disco gold.

Picadilly - Truffle are one of those reliable labels that don't put something out every week yet, when they do, it's something to get excited about and this rule applies with The Voices. "Cavern" first up on side-A, certainly does feel cavernous, there is some reverb going on here, not too much to muddy the track but enough to give it some space, under that is a bouncy little bassline, FX / delayed vocals, a slamming beat and lots of wierd unidentifiable noises. Next up is "Spooky" which is a nice downbeat number, that again comes with layers of space and echo, nice whining synths and lazy live sounding drums. Over on side-B Woolfy's Neu Disco remix, does have a bit of a krauty influence, especially in the intro where the original's weirdo noises get layered up, and the beats are gradually teased through until the big drop builds and builds, finally giving way to a throbbing bassline and funky guitar lines. As ever Woolfy is on point, and the A-sides originals have more than enough going for them too.

Phonica - The Voices get it very right on this newie for Truffle, who themselves just get on with putting out strong gear quietly. Punk Funk basslines all underpin some proper lively club gear on the A side tracks 'Cavern' and 'Spooky' but it's Woolfy whose mix on the B side works perfectly in its darkly cosmic disco way. We like.

Truffle 07
Andrew Allsgood "Raise It On Down"

Release Date: April 2008

Tracklisting:

A1: Original

B1: Drrtyhaze Remix

REVIEWS

Picadilly - Andrew Allsgood is back, following his "Disco Pigs In Space" release, with this ace punky slow mo disco jaunt. "Raise It Down" is pretty sluggish in a punk funk kinda way, has a great oddball vocal, big groovy fx lead guitar and a rocky edge that'll work on most of your eclectic floors. On the B-side Drrtyhaze are on the remix duties and take the track on a space disco journey, with a big old clunking beat, loads more of that guitar filtered in the background and just a touch more uptempo than the A-side...Andrew Allsgood's last outing was a sure fire Piccadilly favourite, and so with this second Truffle 12" we are awarding him ROTW for this dirty downbeat grind.

Phonica - Toronto's Andrew Allsgood (Truffle Music) comes with his sophomore effort in as many releases on Truffle Music. 'Raise It On Down' takes over from where (Disco) Pigs In Space left off and raises the heat even higher - slow, smokin', lolloping disco meets punk funk action with wah wah guitars. On the flip NYC's Drrtyhaze (Tirk, Gomma) take on the remix and turn the original into a hypnotic digital disco-tech burner.

iDJ - I can't say I know an awful lot about Andrew Allsgood, other than his last single on Truffle, the brilliantly named '(Disco) Pigs In Space', was rather good. 'Raise It On Down' is fun, too, a midtempo, bass-heavy chugger that sounds like the demented musical ramblings of smack-addled deep south gold prospectors (this is a good thing, by the way). New York's Dirrtyhaze remix, turning it into a shiny space disco affair with more plastic bells and whistles than Thunderbird 2. MA 4 (out of 5)

Truffle 06
Andrew Allsgood "(Disco) Pigs In Space"

Release Date: April 2007

Tracklisting:

A1: Original

B1: Brennan Green Oh Snap! Five Oh! Mix

B2: Steve Yanko 7 Steps To Insanity Mix

REVIEWS

Turntable Lab - Andrew Allsgood's "Disco Pigs In Space"...is about as mental as they come, and is really beautiful at the same time- it's got the tripped out nu disco sound down- with more trippiness than disco, just the way I like it...Steve Yanko's mix is super punchy and still way the hell out there. Yanko adds his own keys and new rhythms and brings out the jazz sound of the track. For fans of Nick Chacona, Idjut Boys, and Lindstrom.

Piccadilly - Allgood's first 12" for Truffle is a perfect encapsulation of those good bits from deep techy house and leftfield post-disco dance, all stirred up and baked into a tasty, sticky suet pudding of a record...label boss Steve Yanko (goes) all Arthur Russell (if he made house music) on us for his strange (but good) version.

Phonica - As the label says, Truffle are certainly digging the roots here with this awesome deep dubby disco workout which is about as low slung as you can possibly get without falling over. A solid bassline holds the track together as it picks up steam, becoming a killer dancefloor groove for the more disvcerning dancefloors. Brennan Green adds a touch of panache with some quirky synth keys and Steve Yanko takes it below the belt with his deep take on the original groove. Killer dubbed out disco.

Truffle 05
Don Cash 'Star Dust'

Release Date: July 2006

Tracklisting:

A1: Original

B1: Steve Yanko Extended Vocal Re-Work

REVIEWS

Soul Seduction - The Truffle label surely making a name for itself amongst the more twisted club fans. This two-tracker from Don Cash is a seriously tweaked out affair, with "Star Dust" featuring a bizarre spoken-word vocal over a new wavey 80's synth and throwback electronic drums. Pop meets punk meets new wave disco here. On the flip Steve Yanko's mix is more of a clubby proto-house kind of groove with the vocal getting full exposure. Brennan Green fans will be delighted with this oddity.

Picadilly - Toronto's Truffle Music throws another curve ball in the shape of Don Cash's "Star Dust", which joins that growing field of fairly indefinable house music. With its quirky vocals, rudimentary retro keys and cluttered handclaps, it garners the disco-not-disco props whether it likes it or not. On his remix, label boss Steve Yanko doubles the length to near eight minutes and nudges it in the right direction for a bit more dancefloor edge.

Truffle 04
Dirty 30 'Rip It Off'

Release Date: May 2006

Tracklisting:

A1: Original

B1: Steve Yanko 86 Mix

REVIEWS

Picadilly - The Truffle debutants return with a second 12" of weirdo dubbed-out 'house-not-house', which is exactly what "Rip It Off" is, if it's anything. Steve Yanko's shuffling mix introduces some extra layers of wigged out guitar, 80s reverb, drum spasms and bass patrol for nearly nine minutes of unhinged excellence.

Phonica - Quirky off kilter nu disco action by the Dirty 30 crew! Dubbed out drums, weird synth melodies and a smashing Steve Yanko remix on the flip. Hot!
